We need groups people can belong to which *simply don't care* if you're white, black, male, female, rich, poor, etc.

Churches, clubs, sports groups, libraries used to be this sort of thing (or at least aspire to), but a lot of them have been eaten by the Internet or just the dynamics of the market; they sort economically 'upwards' by default.

Maybe people in such groups might still feel annoyed by how 'diverse' they are. I dunno.

But we need some new forms of belonging to counter racism.

By 'left' here I mean both the 'center left' of the Clinton and Blair and Silicon Valley 1990s-2000s, a slight skin of humanity over all-devouring markets.

The center has failed. It just has. The sooner we recognise this and get on with it, the better.

But I also mean the 'identity left' which - from the best of intentions - has set up multiple identity groups which you also can't belong to if you're white, male and middle-class, because not sufficiently 'marginalised' to apply.
